A friend of mine sent me this the other day when, desperate for the motivation to get up early the next morning to go for a run, I turned to my favorite discord server and requested some encouragement. I was not disappointed.
I’ve found over the years that it’s insanely easy to give up before you even start trying. My running habit, for instance. In the last two weeks, I’ve given in to the little voice that tells me to reset my alarm for an hour later and go back to sleep, using whatever excuse made sense at the time. Before that, it was this blog. The initial burst of motivation I had a few months ago led me to set up my WordPress account and start brainstorming ideas. But I held off on actually posting anything because I didn’t have all of the kinks worked out yet and it was easy to use that as an excuse.
I managed to find an external kick-in-the-pants that had me impulsively posting the first post I’d had drafted, minus the artwork I’d been trying to get together to include. And now, here I am, three posts in and talking about motivational hedgehog memes.
The long and the short of it is this: it doesn’t matter what your motivation is to get started on a project/habit/etc, as long as it’s something you’re passionate or excited about and you actually start it. If you need to get a buddy to check in with you about your progress, great! If you need to save a motivational hedgehog meme to your phone and look at it periodically, go for it!
Do it for the hedgehog.
